- [Series] 3. Guinsa
Danyang, a picturesque county in North Chungcheong Province, is well known for its eight natural wonders (Danyang Palgyeong), scenic views and cultural attractions and it was on my bucket list for quite a while until I managed to visit it. Now it is by far my favorite area in Korea and one of the most beautiful. Since my trip to Danyang was short and I couldn't visit all the attractions I decided to combine those that were closer to my accommodation and that is how I got to discover Guinsa temple. I didn't know anything about this temple before and I didn't expect anything spectacular either, but I was wrong. It took me thirty minutes by car from the town of Danyang to the temple and I stopped on my way back to the Bobalje Observatory to admire the sunset and enjoy a tranquil beautiful landscape. I reached the temple in the afternoon and I took the last bus from the Cheontae Central Museum to the entrance of the temple. From there I passed the Gwanseongdang (observatory hall) and I was welcomed by an imposing gate and I realized the path is only ascending. Basically the entire walk felt like hiking. What I discovered was not just a temple but a hidden town that reminded me of the Chinese historical movies. Monks were bustling about, working diligently in a pavilion that looked more like a small factory. Their efficient movements confirmed what I'd heard - here, even the most basic sustenance was mindfully crafted by monastic hands. Guinsa is settled in the valley near the Sobaek mountains and is the headquarters of the Cheontae school of Buddhism, the Korean version of China's Tiantai teachings. No wonder everything looked like Beijing's Forbidden City. The temple is huge and quite new, being founded in 1945. During the Korean War (1950-1953), it was destroyed by fire but was rebuilt in 1966, and expanded. After I did some research I discovered it is the largest temple in Korea and accommodates around fifty buildings and still expanding, having a total capacity of around 60,000 people.Unlike other temples, all pavilions are tall, vividly decorated and shiny, culminating with the last shrine called Daejosajeon or Great Teacher Hall near the end of the valley. This shrine was erected in the memory of Sangwol Wongak, the founder of Guinsa. Here visitors are treated to a stunning panorama of Sobaeksan Mountain's jagged peaks rising through the narrow valley. It was late afternoon but the view was breathtaking. Among devoted Cheontae Buddhists the temple is known for vibrant religious ceremonies, attracting both devoted pilgrims and curious travelers. Visitors can explore its intricate halls, serene meditation spaces, and the towering five-story Daejeokgwangjeon Hall (Grand Dharma Hall), which enshrines a majestic golden Buddha. Unfortunately I couldn't see it due to the late hour. While Guinsa Temple draws devoted Cheontae Buddhists and autumn hikers seeking its vibrant foliage, it remains something of a hidden gem, largely undiscovered by the broader, it offers a unique blend of spiritual intensity and stunning architectural beauty, making it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Korea. - [Series] - 1.The Temple of 1,000 Buddhas and 1,000 Pagodas
Temples are an important part of the Korean landscape; from bigger to smaller or more famous to more unknown, they can be found almost everywhere. In the past years, I have been traveling around Korea enough to visit many such places, but only a few have made a strong impression on me. This article is a part of a mini series presenting Top 5 temples that are worth visiting in my opinion. Among these temples, there is one rather close to Gwangju, in Hwasun, Jeollanam-do, called Unjusa (운주사). I first discovered this place in 2015 while on vacation and was really impressed, promising myself I would return,well-known and I did. It is known among Koreans as “the temple of a thousand Buddhas and a thousand pagodas” (Cheonbulcheontap 천불천탑) because it is believed that about 1,000 statues of Buddha and pagodas originally existed there, lasting until the devastation of the Japanese invasions (Imjin War) of the 16th century. The reconstruction projects of the 19th and 20th centuries brought Unjusa to its present form. It is the only temple in the area to have these statues made of stone. It is quite unique, and its initial foundation has been estimated to date to the late 10th or early 11th century in the Goryeo Dynasty according to excavation research performed from 1984–89 by Chonnam National University. However the exact date of the founding of the temple is unknown. Presently, it is home to some 21 pagodas and 94 additional sculptures of the Buddha. The temple itself is not spectacular but what makes it different from all the other temples are the numerous stone Buddhist statues and pagodas and the vibe that you get while here. I would say it is similar with visiting medieval castles in Europe. You get an eerie sense of lives once lived, shaped by past battles and history. If you go by car, as I did, I suggest avoiding the expressway and taking the countryside roads. The scenery is breathtaking if you know how to look for and appreciate the beauty of nature. Moreover, this provides a good opportunity to take a closer look at life in the countryside or the real Korea. For me, these kinds of trips on the sideroads are like a healing therapy. The temple is located in a valley surrounded by hills. Just a couple hundred meters up the pathway, after the entrance gate, there is a collection of stone Buddhas lying in an open field. Going straight, there is a clearing where the vast majority of the temple’s pagodas and Buddha statues are located. The first of these pagodas is the Nine-Tier Stone Pagoda. This pagoda was created during the Goryeo Dynasty, is the tallest pagoda at the temple, and is made in a very simple style with no patterns or decorations on it. Many Buddha images and pagodas are dispersed along the way to the peak. The stone Buddha statues of Unjusa are in various positions such as sleeping, standing, seated, or back-to-back. The statues and pagodas are spread all around, including in the surrounding hills. The trails are beautiful and along them a collection of stone statues and pagodas can be admired. Once you reach the top, the view of the Hwasun area unfolds before your eyes. Near the top lies a pair of twelve-meter-long stone sculptures of the Buddha from the Doseon-guksa creation myth. They are called the Stone Statue of the Reclining Buddha, and they look as though they are sleeping. In Korean, they are referred to as wabul(와불). A prosperous center of Buddhism in the past, Unjusa itself may not be spectacular or too different from other temples in Korea for some visitors. Its uniqueness lies in the stylistic characteristics and spatial arrangements of its stone Buddhist statues and pagodas, making it a must-see touristic destination in Jeollanam-do. As it is a small temple, visiting Unjusa does not take long. Still, a short visit could be made into a longer one by enjoying the surrounding nature, enjoying a sandwich, or hiking in the neighboring mountains. I spent two hours exploring the area, stopping to admire all the statues and pagodas, taking many pictures, and hiking all the trails on both sides of the temple. If your weekend allows for only a short trip and you want to get away from the confinement of the city to breathe in the nature of the countryside and the Korea of centuries past, consider a visit to the pagodas and Buddhas of Unjusa. SPECTACULAR BLOSSOM SPRING FESTIVALS Credits: rove.me Yeouido Park transforms into an enchanting destination during the Spring Flower Festival, which is an event that celebrates the bloom of thousands of seasonal flowers, ranging from delicate cherry blossoms to vibrant azaleas. Yeongdeungpo Yeouido Spring Flower Festival is one of the most important festivals held annually in April, right in Yeouido Park. During this time, over 1600 Yoshino cherry trees burst into bloom, blanketing the park in a surreal pink haze that captivates both locals and visitors all around the world. Yeouido Park transforms into an atmospheric location, as if lifted straight from the scene of a romantic K-drama, which makes the experience unique and unforgettable. To heighten the dreamlike atmosphere, the trees are illuminated at night, allowing guests to walk around the blossoms feeling as though they’re walking through a vivid, living dream. 4. GREEN SPACES FOR RELAXATION AND MEDITATION Credits: visitkorea.or.kr Yeouido Park offers peaceful green spaces for relaxation, ideal for visitors who would prefer solitude and alone time to participating in lively cultural events. The park is divided into several themed zones, each designed to provide a unique form of relaxation and connection with nature. One area features an ecological forest, where native plants and wildlife create a natural sanctuary perfect for quiet walks and reflection. Another section includes a grassy pond, inviting visitors to sit by the water’s edge, watch the gentle ripples, and perhaps enjoy a picnic under the shade of a tree. A traditional Korean forest pays tribute to the country’s natural heritage, with winding paths that evoke the tranquillity of ancient landscapes. A place like Yeouido Park is a treasure hidden in the heart of Seoul, and if you choose to experience it, you will quickly find out that you can finally free yourself from the stress of everyday life. 5. Whether you want to spend a quiet afternoon reading under a tree, engage in physical activity, or simply take a peaceful stroll by the river, Yeouido Park’s facilities make it easy to enjoy the outdoors in any season. WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO The park is accessible by public transport, and you are advised to use the subway or a bus as parking isn’t available. Yeongdeungpo Park and the eastern end of Yeouido Hangang Park are the best locations for taking the most gorgeous cherry blossom pictures. - [Series] 2.Hyangiram
Korea is home to four hermitages dedicated to the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, with Hyangiram being arguably the most famous. While the temple complex includes several halls and pavilions worth exploring, what truly sets Hyangiram Hermitage apart is its breathtaking natural setting. Located in the farthest corner of Yeosu's Dolsan-do Island, this small temple is probably the most important attraction in the area and is a very popular spot for admiring the sunrises (especially on the first day of the year) and sunsets. This is my second article about Top 5 temples in Korea according to my taste. The temple was originally named Wontongam and was established by monk Wonhyo during the 13th year of Queen Seondeok's reign (644 A.D.) in the Baekje Dynasty. It was renamed Geumoam Hermitage in 958.A.D.by Monk Yunpil during the Goryeo Dynasty, and it was a base camp for Buddhist monks who helped Admiral Yi Sun-sin (이순신) in his naval battles against the Japanese fleet during the Imjin War (1592-1598).During the Joseon Dynasty, in 1715, the hermitage was rebuilt after being destroyed during the war, by the monk Inmuk-daesa and was renamed Hyangiram Hermitage. Hyangil-am, which literally means “facing the sun,” is not a very big temple hermitages ever have. There are seven cave passages at Hyangiram, and as the saying goes, if you pass through all of them, your wish will come true. The temple complex has a few halls and pavilions to explore, but the unique beauty of Hyangiram Hermitage comes from its stunning natural environment. What I like most about this small temple is not only the stunning view from above but also the mountain path that leads to the temple. It takes about thirty minutes to get to the temple at a slow pace. The road narrows through high rocks, and the combined smells of the sea, wood, and earth offer an incredible experience for those passionate about nature and mountain climbing. If you set your mind free from any thoughts while advancing slowly through the rocks, you will feel the sacredness of this place. You will have to ascend steep stone staircases and wind through narrow pathways under huge slabs of rock to reach Hyangiram. The trail features several stone passages carved into the rock, with Haetalmun being the most renowned. Noted for its extreme narrowness, Haetalmun symbolizes the need to let go of greed and desire There's simply no room to carry excess through such a tight space. This idea is reflected in its name, which means "liberation gate. "According to local belief, passing through all seven stone passages at Hyangiram Hermitage will grant you a wish and once you reach the temple, an incredible view will repay you for the effort it took to get there. The blue, infinite sea, the mountain backdrop, and the sound of Buddhist prayers all create a magical experience. The Buddhist shrine at the top is simple, nothing spectacular if you have already seen one of Korea's grand temples, such as those in Gyeongju. Nevertheless, this hermitage provides a quiet retreat from the city and a view that will take your breath away. There are several resting points on the trail, the first being an area with statues and next a small cafe, followed by the temple itself and, a little bit closer to the top, a great spot for meditation. Scattered throughout Hyangiram Hermitage are numerous turtle statues, a symbol closely tied to the temple. This symbolism comes from its location atop Geumosan Mountain where "Geumosan" translates to "large golden turtle. "The mountain earned its name both from the turtle shell like texture of its rocks and from the belief that the island resembles a giant turtle carrying a Buddhist scripture on its back. There are two trails that one can take to reach the hermitage. The quicker trail (and the most beautiful, in my opinion) has an endless array of stairs. The other trail is a gradual ascent along a dirt path (I returned to the village on this trail). In August, when the heat and humidity are at their peak, each step can be challenging but still worth climbing. Once the stairs end, the trail becomes much easier, and you will come upon the Buddhist interpretation of the "three wise monkeys" in the form of three statues of Buddha with the message "speak no evil, see no evil, hear no evil. "The challenge of this hike is to pass through a narrow crevice between enormous rocks. The crevice opens into another hidden passageway of stairs that finally leads to Hyangiram. The temple complex has multiple prayer halls nestled in different areas of the rocky mountain. There is another pair of stairs that leads to a smaller prayer hall. The last section of hidden stairs opens onto the highest point of the temple.Another prayer hall is located there with many statues around it. At the end of her two week holiday in Korea, I asked my mother to choose the place she had liked most, and it was Hyangiram. It may be yours, too. Photographs by Melline Galani
