  • A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO KOREAN PRESCRIPTIONS AND PHARMACY BAGS

Whether you’re a tourist seeking quick relief for a cold or a resident navigating healthcare in South Korea, understanding how prescriptions work can save you confusion and ensure you take your medicine correctly. Korean pharmacies operate a bit differently from what you might be used to, especially when it comes to how medications are dispensed and labelled. This guide will help you read your prescription bags confidently and understand the essentials of Korean pharmacy culture. 1.     WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT AT A KOREAN PHARMACY? Credits: visitkorea.or.kr In South Korea, after visiting a clinic or hospital, you’ll usually receive a printed or digital prescription (처방전) that you take to a nearby pharmacy (약국). Pharmacies are easy to spot, with a green cross or the word “약” displayed prominently. At a Korean pharmacy, you can expect the following things: ·   LICENSED PHARMACY CONSULTATION - A trained pharmacist is always ready to advise you on over-the-counter (OTC) remedies, proper dosing, and potential side effects or help you read and understand the prescriptions you get from your doctor. ·   PRESCRIPTION FILLING - The pharmacist will process and dispense prescription drugs directly and often contact your doctor if there are any questions. ·   MEDICATIONS & SUPPLEMENTS - Pharmacies in South Korea sell a wide selection of both OTC medications (common pain relievers like Ibuprofen, cold or allergy meds, digestive aids, vitamins, herbal supplements, and traditional remedies) and prescription medications. ·   HEALTH & WELLNESS PRODUCTS - All pharmacies have products such as bandages, wound care, first-aid kits, thermometers, sanitizers, blood pressure monitors, vitamins, face masks, and sunblock. ·   INSURANCE CARD (건강보험증) - Many pharmacies accept the national health insurance card that helps you get discounts at hospitals, clinics and pharmacies, reduce fees for most medical services and makes you eligible for national health check-ups; international students staying in Korea for more than 6 months are required by law to enroll in the National Health Insurance (NHI) system to have full access to South Korea’s healthcare system. ·   POINT/STAMP PROGRAMS - Some pharmacy chains offer loyalty points or stamps that you can redeem for discounts on future purchases. ·   IN-STORE PRIVATE COUNSELING AREA - Many pharmacies have a small partitioned desk or semi-private corner where clients can have one-to-one discussions about sensitive health concerns. ·  CLEAR PACKAGING & LABELING - Medications come in blister packs or labelled bottles, with dosing instructions in Korean and oftentimes also in English in tourist areas. · BASIC HEALTH SCREENINGS - Many pharmacies offer quick tests like blood pressure checks, blood sugar monitoring, or COVID antigen tests, which are usually free or for a small fee. EXTENDED HOURS Pharmacies are typically open from 9 AM to 6/7 PM (Monday-Friday), 9 AM to 1/2 PM (on Saturdays) and closed on Sundays and Public Holidays. Although rare, in big cities like Seoul and Busan, you can find night pharmacies (야간약국), particularly near hospitals or in busy districts, which are open until 11 PM or even 24 hours a day. You can find night pharmacies using apps like Naver Map, Kakeo Map or the official website of the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service (HIRA) by searching 24시간 약국” (24-hour pharmacy) or “야간 약국” (night pharmacy). 2.   WHAT MAKES KOREAN PHARMACIES UNIQUE? Credits: visitkorea.or.kr · PRE-DIVIDED SINGLE-DOSE POUCHES - Unlike in some countries where you receive a box/bottle of pills with written instructions, Korean pharmacies often divide your medicine into single-dose packets, labelled by time and day. You’ll typically receive a small paper bag with multiple pouches, each containing a full set of medications for a specific time ( morning, lunch, evening). · PAPER BAGS INSTEAD OF PLASTIC BOTTLES - Your meds come in a labelled envelope or bag with all your doses organized inside. ·   CLEAR TIME-OF-DAY LABELING - pouches are marked with specific times, making it easy to follow the schedule. ·   MIXED PILLS IN ONE PACKET - instead of one type of pill per box/bottle, each packet contains a mix of different pills you need to take together. ·   PRINTED DOSAGE SUMMARY - A pharmacy slip or label explains how many days the meds are for, how often to take them, and when to take them. ·  MINIMAL INFORMATION ON THE PILLS THEMSELVES - The pills usually come without individual labels or names, which is why it’s important to follow the instructions from the pharmacist carefully. ·  MORE PHARMACIST-CLIENT INTERACTION - Pharmacists usually explain how to take your meds in person, sometimes even drawing pictures or highlighting times. 3.   WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OVER-THE-COUNTER AND PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS? Credits: visitkorea.or.kr Many medications, like antibiotics or stronger painkillers, require a doctor’s prescription in Korea. However, common cold remedies, painkillers, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, digestive aids, and topical creams can be purchased over-the-counter at most pharmacies. If you're looking for something specific, you can ask the pharmacist directly, and you’ll be recommended the best option for you. 4.   WHAT IS THE ANATOMY OF A KOREAN PHARMACY BAG? Credits: Sparafrfr r/koreatravel Reddit Each prescription pouch is clearly labeled, but it can be tricky if you don’t know Korean, so here is a list of the information you’ll usually see on a pharmacy bag or envelope: ·       Patient’s name and age – 환자 이름 및 나이 ·       Pharmacy name and contact information – 약국 이름 및 연락처 ·       Doctor’s name or hospital –  의사 이름 또는 병원 이름 ·       Date of dispensing – 조제일자 / 약 조제 날짜 ·       Dosage instructions – 복용 방법 ·       Duration – 기간 ·       Number of doses per day – 1일 복용 횟수 ·       Warnings or additional instructions –   주의사항 또는 추가 안내 Credits: flickr.com 5.   WHAT ARE SOME COMMON KOREAN TERMS THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW TO READ A PHARMACY PRESCRIPTION IN KOREAN? ·       이름  = name ·       나이 = age ·       약 = medicine ·       내복약 = oral medicine (to be taken by mouth) ·       외용약 = topical medicine (external use) ·       약국 = pharmacy ·       의사 = doctor ·       병원 = hospital ·       조제 = dispensing ·       아침 = morning ·       점심 = afternoon ·       저녁 = evening ·       자기 전 = before going to sleep ·       식후 = after meals ·       식전 = before meals ·       식후 30분 = 30 minutes after eating ·       하루 1회 = once a day ·       하루 2회 = twice a day ·       하루 3회 = three times a day ·       금주 = no alcohol ·       금연 = no smoking 6.   WHAT IMPORTANT PHRASES MIGHT YOU SEE ON A PHARMACY PRESCRIPTION IN SOUTH KOREA? COMMON DOSAGE INSTRUCTIONS ·       1일 1회 복용 = take once a day ·       1일 2회 복용 = take twive a day ·       1일 3회 복용 = take three times a day ·       식후 30분 복용 = take 30 minutes after meals ·       식전 복용 = take before meals ·       취침 전 복용 = take before bedtime ·       통증 시 복용 = take when in pain ·       필요시 복용 = take if needed GENERAL WARNINGS & ADVICE ·       물과 함께 복용하세요 = take with water ·       음식과 함께 복용하세요 = take with food ·       졸음을 유발할 수 있습니다 = may cause drowsiness ·       운전이나 기계 조작 주의 = caution when driving or operating machinery ·       직사광선을 피하세요 = avoid direct sunlight ·       어린이 손에 닿지 않는 곳에 보관하세요 = keep out of reach of children STORAGE & HANDLING ·       서늘한 곳에 보관하세요 = store in a cool place ·       냉장 보관 = keep refrigerated ·       개봉 후 사용하세요 = use after opening 7.   WHAT ARE SOME TIPS FOR FOREIGNERS FOR NAVIGATING KOREAN PHARMACIES? Credits: koreatimes.co.kr ·   UNDERSTAND THE SEPARATION OF ROLE IN THE KOREAN HEALTHCARE SYSTEM - In South Korea, doctors prescribe, and pharmacists dispense, so you won't get medicine directly from the hospital or clinic. You must take your prescription to a pharmacy nearby and purchase everything recommended by your doctor in your prescription. · ASK A KOREAN FRIEND TO ACCOMPANY YOU OR USE A TRANSLATION APP - Most pharmacists are helpful but may not speak fluent English, so bring a Korean-speaking friend or use translation apps like Papago or Google Translate to communicate symptoms or ask questions effectively. · LOOK FOR THE 약 (YAK) SIGN - The Korean word for medicine is 약 and is often displayed prominently on signs outside, so if you’re looking for a pharmacy, scan for this symbol. · MIND THE OPENING HOURS - Pharmacies near hospitals often have extended hours, but neighborhood ones may close early or on Sundays, so always check before you go, especially in the evening and at night. ·   KNOW YOUR ALLERGIES AND COMMUNICATE THEM CLEARLY - Let the pharmacist know if you have any allergies or conditions to avoid any adverse reactions. ·   ASK HOW TO TAKE THE MEDICINE CORRECTLY - If something is unclear or you just want to make sure you understood the correct way to take the prescribed medicine, don’t hesitate to ask questions for clarification. ·    KEEP THE PAPER BAG AND POUCHES ORGANIZED - Korean prescriptions often come in daily-dose packets for each time of the day (morning, afternoon, evening), so don’t mix them up because each pouch is carefully prepared and should be taken as is, at the indicated times. ·  FOLLOW THE SYMBOLS AND MARKINGS CAREFULLY - Dosage instructions are sometimes marked with simple symbols, so learn the common ones and confirm with the pharmacist if you’re unsure. ·   NEVER EXPECT REFILLS - In South Korea, prescriptions are usually one-time   use, so if you need ongoing medication, you’ll have to revisit the doctor and ask for another prescription after your health situation is reassessed. ·  CARRY SOME CASH WITH YOU - While the majority of the pharmacies in South Korea accept cards, smaller or neighborhood pharmacies might prefer cash, so having a bit of Korean won on hand is a great idea. Navigating a pharmacy in Korea doesn’t have to be intimidating because with a bit of vocabulary and understanding of how medication is packaged and labelled, you can confidently manage your prescriptions. Whether you’re here for a short trip or a long stay, learning how to read a Korean prescription bag is a simple but empowering step toward feeling at home in South Korea!

  • ULTIMATE GUIDE TO JJIMJILBANG: SOUTH KOREA’S UNIQUE BATHHOUSE CULTURE

If you’re planning a trip to South Korea, there is one cultural experience that you should absolutely have on your bucket list. Jjimjilbang ( 찜질방) is a term referring to Korean bathhouses that function like social hubs, relaxation heavens, and wellness centers, not just places to soak in hot water. Whether you want to unwind after a long flight or spend a cozy night somewhere unique, jjimjilbangs offer an unforgettable local experience. Here is a short guide that tells you what to expect from a jjimjilbang if you ever get the chance to visit one! 1.   WHAT EXACTLY IS A JJIMJILBANG? Credits: vinwonders.com A jjimjilbang (짜질방) is a large, gender-segregated public bathhouse in Korea, typically open 24 hours a day. Unlike Western spa centers, jjimjilbangs are very affordable and cater to families, solo visitors, couples, and even overnight guests. A jjimjilbang is a place where wellness meets tradition in a casual and friendly setting. 2.   WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT INSIDE A JJIMJILBANG? Larger jjimjilbangs also have extras like PC rooms, karaoke, arcades, movie theatres, and massage chairs. You could easily spend half a day or a full night exploring everything. 3.   WHAT FEATURES ARE INCLUDED IN THE JJIMJILBANG EXPERIENCE? Credits: blog.trazy.com DO: ·    Hygiene is a must, so shower before entering any baths and saunas. ·    Be fully nude in the gender-segregated areas because swimwear isn’t allowed. ·   Always wear the jjimjilbang uniform in co-ed areas outside of the gender-segregates areas and baths. ·    Use a towel when sitting on hot stones and benches for hygiene and comfort. ·    Speak quietly and always keep your voice down, especially in resting zones. ·    Tie up long hair or keep it out of the water to respect cleanliness. ·    Be respectful of others’ personal space and don’t stare to avoid making others uncomfortable. ·   If you’re unsure what to do, watch the locals because they’re the best guides to jjimjilbang behaviour. ·   If you come with a romantic partner and want to spend time together, use only the shared (co-ed) relaxation areas (jjimjil rooms, TV lounges, snack bars, cafes, sleeping and resting zones, massage chairs, entertainment areas). ·   If you come with your romantic partner, pick a large jjimjilbang for more co-ed zones and fun activities. ·   If you decide to stay overnight with your partner, you can sleep in the shared sleeping rooms. DON’T: ·    Don’t take photos or videos because privacy is very important, especially in nude areas! ·    Don’t jump or splash in the baths because a jjimjilbang is a place for relaxation, not your usual pool. ·    Don’t eat in the bathing areas because food is for designated areas like dining or lounge spaces. ·  Don’t stay too long in saunas or hot baths because you are supposed to take a rest to avoid overheating. · Don’t hog communal items like pillows or mats, and use only what you need, and then return everything. · Don’t draw attention to yourself and your romantic partner by PDA, cuddling or other related behaviors as jjimjilbangs are seen as communal and family-friendly spaces. ·   Don’t go with your romantic partner in areas that are strictly gender-segregated and naked-only. You are supposed to go to separate floors or sections to bathe and then later reunite in the jjimjilbang area. 7.   WHAT ARE SOME TIPS FOR A GREAT JJIMJILBANG EXPERIENCE? Credits: randomwire.com ·       A jjimjilbang isn’t a rushed experience, so go there with time to spare. Many people stay in a jjimjilbang for several hours or even overnight. ·       Hydrate often because you’ll definitely sweat a lot. Drink as much water or sikhye (sweet rice drink), which are both sold inside, and avoid alcohol when using the sauna. ·       Explore the jjimjilbang and try different rooms, as there are multiple themed rooms (salt rooms, ice rooms, jade rooms, charcoal rooms), each with different health benefits. ·       Consider getting a body scrub, which is a Korean tradition that leaves your skin baby-smooth. It’s an intense experience, but it’s one of the most popular treatments in a jjimjilbang. ·       Relax and nap in the common rest areas, on heated floors or recliners. People usually nap with towels rolled into ”lamb head” shapes ( 양머리) . You should try it for fun and to fit in with the locals! ·       Try classic jjimjilbang snacks in the designated snack bars or restaurants. ·       Visit at night because jjimjilbangs are generally quieter in the late evening and early morning. ·       Bring a friend or go solo, as both options are fine. Locals often go there alone to recharge, but it’s even more fun to go with friends. 8.   WHAT ARE SOME CULTURAL SHOCKS THAT INTERNATIONAL VISITORS CAN EXPERIENCE IN A JJIMJILBANG? Credits: edition.cnn.com Visiting a jjimjilbang can be a fascinating and relaxing experience, but for international visitors, it can also come with a few cultural shocks. Here are the most common ones: ·       NUDITY IN THE BATH AREA - In the mogyoktang (bathhouse) section, everyone is completely nude because swimsuits or underwear are not allowed .  This rule applies to both men and women in separate areas. For many Westerners or travelers from modest cultures, this level of comfort with nudity can be surprising. ·       GENDER SEGREGATION RULES - The bath area is strictly separated by gender, so couples, friends, or families of opposite sexes cannot bathe together and must go to their respective zones. In contrast, jjimjilbang zones (sauna/lounge) are mixed-gender and require wearing provided cotton uniforms. ·       SLEEPING ON THE FLOOR - Many jjimjilbangs allow overnight stays, but you sleep on heated floors, not beds. There are mats and pillows, but this can feel uncomfortable or unfamiliar to visitors used to mattresses or private rooms. ·       NO PERSONAL SPACE - In shared resting zones or jjimjil rooms, people may nap, chat, or sit very close by. The concept of personal space is different, so don't be surprised if someone sleeps a few inches from you. ·       FOOD INSIDE THE SPA - It’s normal to eat inside the jjimjilbang, so people often enjoy sikhye (sweet rice drink) , hard-boiled eggs ,  or even full meals in their spa uniforms in dining designated areas. Eating in spa clothes, on mats or low tables, may feel strange to first-timers. ·       STRICT ETIQUETTE - Talking loudly, taking photos, or acting inappropriately, especially in the nude areas, is considered very rude. Make sure you always follow the specific Korean etiquette when visiting a jjimjilbang!   9.       HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST JJIMJILBANG EXPERIENCE FOR YOU? Credits: trazy.com ·       KNOW YOUR PRIORITIES - ask yourself questions to clarify your needs and preferences (Do I want a luxurious or budget jjimjilbang experience? Am I planning to stay overnight or just spend a few hours? Do I need a foreign-friendly place with English support? Am I planning to come with a partner, a friend or family?) ·       PAY ATTENTION TO THE JJIMJILBANG TYPE - there are different types of jjimjilbangs, such as traditional and large-scale jjimjilbangs that offer a full experience (Dragon Hill Spa in Seoul), luxury jjimjilbangs (SPA Land in Busan) or budget-friendly jjimjilbangs (usually found in small neighborhoods) ·       CONSIDER OPTIONS NEAR YOUR LOCATION - Seoul has jjimjilbangs near major stations like Seoul Station, Gangnam, or Itaewon, while Busan is famous for jjimjilbangs like Spa Land and Hurshimchung Spa; if you’re near Incheon Airport, Spa On Air (which is found inside the airport) is a must-visit ·       TAKE INTO ACCOUNT OPENING HOURS - while a great number of jjimjilbangs are open 24/7 and are great for late-night arrivals or early departures, some jjimjilbangs close at midnight and don’t allow overnight stays, so double-check before visiting ·       FOREIGNER-FRIENDLY FEATURES - for international visitors, the first-time visit to a jjimjilbang could be disorienting, so make sure you choose a jjimjilbang with a foreigner-friendly website and English-speaking staff to get clear instructions for the specific etiquette unless you have a Korean friend accompanying you ·       TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHO ACCOMPANIES YOU - decide if you go alone, with a partner, your friends or family -        Solo travelers might prefer quieter jjimjilbangs with good sleeping zones and saunas focused on healing. -        Couples can’t enter the bath area together due to gender separation, but the jjimjil rooms are co-ed, making them great for date spots, so look for places that offer romantic views, private lounges ,  or cafe zones inside so you can spend time with your romantic partner. -        Choosing a jjimjilbang that's perfect for going with friends means picking a place that’s not only relaxing but also fun, social, and spacious enough for group activities. Look for jjimjilbangs that are popular, spacious, and have multiple zones because they offer large common areas, multiple sauna types, cafes and snack bars, and entertainment options like PC rooms, noraebangs, board games and comic books libraries, arcade games, and food courts. -        If you’re travelling with your children, pick a jjimjilbang with play areas, kid-friendly saunas ,  and enough space for everyone to relax. Many large jjimjilbangs cater to families and have amenities like arcades or karaoke rooms. 10.   WHY SHOULD YOU TRY THE JJIMJILBANG EXPERIENCE?   Credits: travel-stained.com ·       UNIQUE CULTURAL EXPERIENCE - jjimjilbang is more than just a spa, it’s a slice of everyday Korean life ·       AFFORDABLE LUXURY - for  just ₩10.000-₩20.000, you get hours (even overnight access) to hot baths, saunas, nap rooms, and entertainment zones, so it’s a budget-friendly option compared to traditional spas or hotels ·       TOTAL RELAXATION - jjimjilbangs combine hot baths, saunas, and rest areas to help you fully unwind and de-stress, so you’ll walk out feeling lighter, calmer, and totally refreshed ·       FLEXIBLE FOR EVERY VIBE – whether you’re chilling alone or laughing in a sauna room with your partner, family or friends, jjimjilbangs are flexible for every vibe, from social to romantic or solitary If you're looking to immerse yourself in Korean culture in a relaxing and affordable way, a jjimjilbang visit should be at the top of your list. So grab your towel, shed your stress, and step into one of Korea's most beloved traditions. It’s absolutely worth it!

During a weekday visit, the park proved to be an enjoyable destination for young children approximately 100 centimeters in height. Unfortunately, inclement weather affected our experience, as it rained during our visit. Lacking umbrellas or ponchos, unlike many local visitors who were well-prepared, we sought shelter in the indoor children’s playground, which operates for 40 minutes every hour. Additionally, ordering food within the park posed some challenges due to language barriers; staff members did not speak English, and the automated ordering kiosks did not display options in English. For non-Korean speakers, purchasing snacks from the food carts may be a more convenient alternative, as they typically offer easier ordering processes.   From Miniature Landmarks to Thrilling Rides, LEGOLAND Has It All   Credits to: www.mickeyvisit.com Next in line is Legoland amusement park. • Discover Sinji Island (신지도): A Hidden Gem in Wando

Summer, the season we wait for all year, has arrived in Korea with sunshine, energy, scorching heat and also endless possibilities. It's the time for vacations, golden tans, and seaside escapes that sometimes feel straight out of a travel magazine. Sure, the heat and humidity are intense, but the rewards make it all worth it. As a peninsula, Korea offers the best of both worlds: peaceful mountain retreats for those craving calm, and breezy coastal towns for sunseekers and ocean lovers. Whether you're chasing waterfalls, exploring hidden beaches, or just soaking in the summer mood, Korea in summer is pure magic. Sinji Myeongsasipri Beach (신지 명사십리 해수욕장) On a blazing hot Saturday, I was craving an escape from the heat, somewhere with a cool breeze and the soothing sound of waves. That’s when I stumbled upon one of the best-kept secrets in South Jeolla Province. The western coast of Korea is famous for its maze of islands, winding shorelines, and rich mudflats teeming with marine life. The water here isn’t always crystal clear, but if you know where to look, you’ll find hidden gems that are absolutely worth the trip. Picture this: a quiet island where golden sand stretches as far as the eye can see, the ocean sparkles in shades of emerald, and the beach literally sings beneath your feet. No, this isn’t a tropical daydream, it’s Sinji Island (신지도), a hidden paradise just a short drive over the bridge from Wando’s mainland, offering the perfect summer escape for anyone craving sea breezes, quiet nature, and wide open skies. At the heart of the island is Sinji Myeongsasipri Beach (신지 명사십리 해수욕장), and trust me, it’s not your average beach. This stunning stretch of sand goes on for 4km, with super soft grains that actually sing when you walk on them (yes, really!). The name “Myeongsasipri” means “forty li [1] of singing sand,” and it’s one of the few beaches in Korea where you can experience this rare natural sound. And that’s not all, this beach has been Blue Flag certified for eight years straight, meaning pristine waters, eco-friendly facilities, and some of the cleanest shores in Korea. But the magic doesn’t stop at the sand. Behind the beach, a fragrant pine forest offers shady trails and cozy camping spots, while the nearby Wando Marine Healing Center lets you unwind with seawater therapy and rejuvenating seaweed baths. Just opened in November 2023, this healing center has already become  the  place to unwind after a day at Myeongsasipri Beach—or to treat yourself to a full wellness getaway! In less than a year, it’s turned into a favorite for anyone craving a break from the daily grind. Surprisingly, for a summer weekend, the beach was calm and not crowded at all. Aside from a large group attending a CrossFit private event and another group from the wellness center, most visitors were just small families or couples making it feel peaceful and relaxed. View from afar of the Wando Marine Healing Center As any seaside location fresh seafood delights are the star here. From raw fish platters (hoe - 회) to marinated crab (gejang- 게장) and local specialties like braised hairtail fish (galchi jorim- 갈치 조림), you’ll find dishes made straight from the catch of the day in nearby restaurants. I am not a fan of raw fish or other raw seafood so I opted for a Korean-style cooked seafood that was delicious and fresh. Overall, I spent a wonderful day here enjoying the sand, the water while feeling healed by the sound of the sea and the cooling breeze. And let’s not forget the views—whether you’re watching the sunset paint the sky in pastels or gazing at the horizon where mountains meet sea, every moment here feels like a postcard. • Seonyudo Park: Seoul’s Island Escape in the Middle of the Han River

If you think Seoul is all high-rises and neon lights, think again. Nestled right in the middle of the Han River is Seonyudo Park  (선유도공원), a serene, eco-friendly island park that blends industrial history with lush greenery and creative design. It’s one of those rare places where nature, architecture, and sustainability meet, and it’s just a short walk from Hapjeong or Dangsan. From Water Purification Plant to Urban Oasis Once upon a time, Seonyudo wasn’t a park at all, it was an industrial water treatment facility . But in the early 2000s, instead of tearing it down, the city transformed the island into an innovative urban green space. Today, remnants of the old plant are carefully preserved and integrated into gardens, pathways, and viewing platforms. The result? A park unlike any other in Seoul. You’ll walk past rusted tanks turned into art, concrete basins now filled with aquatic plants, and vine-covered steel frames that once held machinery. It’s a brilliant reuse of space that invites you to reflect on the past while enjoying the present. What to See & Do at Seonyudo Park Here’s what makes the park special: 1. The Greenhouse & Water Garden A highlight for many visitors, this section of the park showcases water purification in action, with lotus ponds, stepping stones, and tropical plants creating a peaceful, almost Zen-like vibe. 2. The Garden of Time This area features preserved ruins from the industrial plant, symbolizing the passage of time and Seoul’s transformation from industry to ecology. 3. Skywalks and Bridges Elevated walkways and small bridges offer views over the river and inside the former plant structures, perfect for photos and peaceful reflection. 4. Han River Views Because the park is an island, you’re surrounded by water. Whether it’s sunrise, sunset, or just a cloudy afternoon, the views are unbeatable. Sit by the railing and watch bikers and joggers race past on the riverbanks. Best Ways to Enjoy Your Visit 🧺 Bring a picnic  and sit on one of the open lawns. 📷 Photography lovers  will enjoy the industrial-meets-nature vibe. 🧘 Come solo  for a quiet walk or journaling session. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family-friendly  with flat paths, small ponds, and fun spaces for kids to explore. 🌇 Perfect at sunset: the changing light brings out the texture in the old structures. How to Get There 🚇 Subway : Take Line 2 or 6 to Hapjeong Station , then walk across Seonyudo Bridge  (about 10-15 minutes). 🕒 Open Hours : Typically 6 AM-midnight 💵 Admission : Free! There are restrooms, vending machines, and shaded spots throughout the park, no shops inside, so grab snacks or coffee before you go. Seonyudo Park is proof that beauty can be born from the unexpected. Once a symbol of industrial utility, this small island is now a beloved green space where city life slows down. It’s a must-visit for those looking to experience Seoul beyond the tourist trail. Whether you're a nature lover, a design nerd, or just someone who needs a peaceful walk, Seonyudo Park is Seoul’s hidden gem  waiting to be discovered.

  • A Walk Through Memory and Honor: Visiting the National Cemetery of Korea

Nestled in southern Seoul’s quiet Dongjak District , the National Cemetery of Korea  is more than a resting place, it's a living monument to the country's modern history and the people who shaped it. From military heroes to independence fighters and former presidents, the cemetery honors those who dedicated their lives to Korea’s freedom and peace. A Sacred Landscape of Reflection First established in 1955 , the Seoul National Cemetery was created following the Korean War, at a time when the country was rebuilding from the ground up. The sprawling grounds sit against the backdrop of Gwanaksan Mountain , providing a tranquil and respectful setting for remembrance. As you walk along the paths, lined with pines and cherry trees, there’s a powerful sense of quiet dignity. Rows upon rows of neatly arranged white headstones give the site its signature look, with each stone representing a life of courage and sacrifice. In spring, the cemetery is transformed by blossoming cherry trees , offering a striking contrast between the softness of nature and the weight of national memory. Who Rests Here? The cemetery is the final resting place for a wide range of notable individuals: Soldiers  who fought in the Korean and Vietnam Wars Independence activists  from the Japanese colonial era Police officers, civil servants , and other public figures Four South Korean presidents , including Syngman Rhee  and Park Chung-hee These figures are interred here not only for their rank but for their lasting impact on the nation’s story. Monuments and Memorials The cemetery isn’t just a place for graves, it's also home to several important memorials: A Memorial Tower  serves as the focal point for national ceremonies. The Patriotic Martyrs’ Hall  and Exhibition Center  offer historical context about Korea’s modern struggles and triumphs. Sculptures, inscriptions, and commemorative plaques dot the grounds, each telling a unique story. These landmarks help visitors engage more deeply with Korea’s path to democracy and peace.\ A Living Tradition: Memorial Day and Ceremonies Every June 6 , Koreans observe Memorial Day , and the National Cemetery becomes the heart of national remembrance. High-ranking officials, including the President, attend a solemn ceremony filled with music, speeches, and a moment of nationwide silence. Flags are lowered to half-mast, and citizens across the country pause to reflect. It’s one of the most meaningful days in the Korean calendar: a reminder that the freedoms of today were hard-earned. • Unforgettable Summer Fun: Ride, Feed, and Explore at a Local Ranch

There's something undeniably magical about horseback riding—the rhythm of hooves on earth, the bond between rider and animal, the wind in your hair as you take in sweeping views. And there are many places around Korea for taking horse riding lessons or experiencing horse riding as entertainment. Riding is a sport where you commune with an animal and is thus good for one's emotional well-being and also an intense exercise with numerous health benefits. But even without the benefits, first and foremost, it's a fun activity. If you've ever wanted to experience that magic, Songsan Riding School (송산승마스카) in Gwangju, South Jeolla Province, is the perfect place to start. With Children's Day approaching, I found myself scrambling for the perfect outdoor activity - something immersed in nature yet conveniently close to the city. My online search led me to an unexpected gem: Songsan Riding School (송산승마스카) in Gwangju's peaceful outskirts. What began as a one-time holiday solution has since become our family's favorite nature retreat. This charming spot offers so much more than just horseback riding (though that alone would be wonderful). The adjacent sheep farm adds another layer of delight, with interactive activities that captivate visitors of all ages. Every visit feels like a mini-adventure - whether we're bonding with gentle horses, feeding curious sheep, or simply enjoying the fresh countryside air. A horse waiting for the rider. Going there was probably the best decision I made. One aspect I should mention is that both my children had previous experiences with horses. My daughter has loved these animals since she was little. Although they didn't take regular riding lessons, we would go from time to time to an animal farm or an adventure park back home, where they rode animals from smaller horses like ponies to bigger ones like Lipizzans. That day the weather was fine, a bit windy but still warm. We arrived at the Songsan School at about 11 a.m. I was afraid that the place would be packed, but I guess we were lucky because even though there were a number of people, it was far from being crowded. We left the car in the parking lot near the ticket office and headed inside. We were surprised to find that the place was more than just a horseback riding school, more like an animal farm with some experience areas. From the time we arrived, it somehow reminded us of the animal farms we used to go to back home. The school offers many activities and horseback riding lessons; they even have a sort of club where people can take out a membership. I think it's best to make a prior reservation for the lessons (especially during summertime when it's more packed), but we were lucky enough to find an available time. One lesson is about forty-five minutes, and I paid 80,000 won per child. It's not cheap, but horseback riding is not an inexpensive sport. During the lesson, my children learned how to guide and command the horse, how to move at the same pace as the animals, and the most interesting aspect, how to gallop. The personnel are excellent and explain everything in detail. Taking riding lessons at Songsan. A cute pony. But the Songsan School has more to offer. For those who don't want to learn how to ride but just experience the feeling of horseback riding, there's an experience consisting of riding ponies or horses (not big ones though) for three rounds. We paid 15,000 won per child for the three rounds. Depending on the child's age and preferences, the caretaker chooses a pony or a horse. There's also a small animal farm where young children can see pigs, cows, guinea pigs, sheep, and of course, horses. We even found some cute puppies to play with. Since the place is quite vast, there's also a pond with a lot of fish in it. Those who want to pay 8,000 won will get a basket full of hay and carrots to feed the animals at another experience zone. They have rabbits, goats, sheep, and horses. I think the rabbits were stuffed already because they didn't eat, but the rest of the animals were more than keen to receive food and were comically friendly. We had so much fun. The feeling of animals eating from your hand is amazing. I had almost forgotten what it felt like. Feeding the sheep. Petting a pony. The riding school also has a substantial picnic area with wooden tables and benches, including a wooden swing, and a nice meadow in front of it. Balls and badminton rackets are free to use. We had ramyeon there along with some snacks and played for a while. A new coffee shop has been added to the facility with delicious desserts and beverages. Drinks from the coffee shop. Interior design of the coffee shop. At the end of the day, my children told me they'd had the best day since they moved to Korea. I guess that's enough to get an impression of what Songsan is like. This is the kind of place where you could spend an entire day outside experiencing various activities or just go for a picnic. There's no doubt that we're going to spend quite a few more days here during this summer. For urban families craving nature without the long drive, Songsan Riding School strikes that perfect balance. It's become our go-to escape whenever we need to unplug and reconnect - with nature, with animals, and with each other. The memories we've made here have turned what could have been just another Children's Day into the start of a beautiful family tradition. Use platforms like Naver, Yanolja, and Goodstay or apps like KLOOK or Airbnb for foreigner-friendly listings. • LANGUAGE BARRIER: Most glamping sites cater to Korean guests, so consider bringing a translation app for check-in or service info. Try looking for locations that mention “foreigner-friendly” or offer English-language websites. • KNOW WHAT’S INCLUDED IN YOUR STAY: Glamping sites generally provide everything you need, so pack only essential items. • TRANSPORT CONSIDERATIONS:  Some glamping spots are outside city centres. Check if they offer pick-up services from nearby stations or on-site parking if you’re renting a car.  Although it’s common practice to use public transport to get to the majority of the glamping locations, if you want to have more flexibility, you should use a car. If you prefer driving, you should use apps for easy navigation that provide directions in English, such as Naver Map or KakaoMap. • PLAN YOUR MEALS:  Some glamping sites have restaurants or convenience stores nearby or offer shared kitchens, grilling spaces or even meal packages. If you’re in a remote glamping location, try bringing easy-to-cook meals or snacks with you.   • PROTECT YOURSELF FROM INSECTS:  Don’t forget to bring insect repellent, which is a necessary item in summer. • CHECK THE WEATHER:  Pack a few warm clothes (jackets, layers) to keep you warm if temperatures drop during the night, especially at lakeside or riverside locations. Don’t forget about rain gear in case it rains, and comfortable shoes if you are planning to walk a lot. • INTERNET CONNECTION: The majority of glamping locations have free wi-fi, but you might need to take portable chargers with you if you want to make sure that you can use technology as long as you need.  • BRING YOUR CAMERA: Many sites are designed to be Instagrammable with fairy lights, mountain backdrops, and cozy domes. Capture moments during golden hour or at night when the lights come on. • RESPECT NATURE AND QUIET HOURS: Glamping is about relaxation and enjoying nature, so avoid loud music, excessive lighting, and littering. Many sites have quiet hours (10 PM–7 AM) and eco-rules you must follow. Whether you're seeking ocean breezes, mountain serenity, or a starry night under canvas, these top 5 summer glamping spots in South Korea offer the perfect blend of comfort and nature. So pack your bags, charge your camera, and get ready to experience the outdoors—without sacrificing your cozy bed. Ready to glamp your way through Korea this summer?

  • The Story of organic farming at Sangha Farm (상하농원)

Gochang in North Jeolla Province is recognized by UNESCO as an ecologically sustainable development location, which made it the perfect place to develop an organic farm. But what is organic farming?Put simply, it is a method of crop and livestock production that does not involve the use of pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, antibiotics, or growth hormones while minimizing soil erosion and degradation, and reducing pollution. Situated about 250 kilometers southeast of Seoul in Gochang County, Sangha Farm offers probably the best possible organic farm life experience. The story of dairy products in the area start in the 60s when the founder of Maeil Dairies purchased land in Gochang to start his dairy business. Ranging from plain milk to flavored dairy products, cheese, flavored coffee, yogurt and baby milk, Maeil Dairies has grown fast over the decades. In 2008 the company added organic milk to its brand becoming the first farm in Korea to produce organic milk. With twenty-two farmers from Gochang, organic Sangha milk finally made its commercial debut in 2018. Sangha Farm was opened to public in 2016 with the aim of showing how organic milk was produced and has become a huge theme park which gives visitors a complete understanding of the ethics l process of organic milk while proposing a new way of life, helping visitors make their own food using locally grown ingredients and making a living off of these agricultural activities. Crops at Sangha Farm. Driving to the farm is the only possible way to go since there is no public transportation available. However, once you leave the highway, the roads are beautiful and the view is very relaxing. Sangha Farm offers a luxury countryside experience. Complete with a golf course, glamping, and a massive swimming pool, you can enjoy an escape. The farm has sheep, deer, cows, chickens, donkeys, goats and more that children will surely love. Plus, you can enjoy farm fresh food, prepared with ingredients grown on-site .I would say it is like a big theme park with a lot to see and experience that satisfies even the most sophisticated tastes. From accommodations to weddings and a winter spa experience, the farm has it all and is a hot tourist destination. In late autumn and early winter, visitors can make their own kimchi with vegetables grown on the farm by experiencing a two-day course that includes the spa, a farmer’s dinner, and a pension stay. There are also separate kimchi-making (kimjang) sessions with an instructor, and the participants will each take three kilograms of kimchi home. Home delivery is also possible. All the ingredients, fresh and locally prepared, are provided by the farm. The cows of Sangha Farm. More lovely cows. View of the farm. The goats of Sangha Farm.   At Sangha Farm, all the herbs and vegetables used for cooking at their restaurant have been grown in their fields. Fruits grown here are used to produce jam at the in-house factory, and the milk produced at the dairy farm is sold at the market and also used as an ingredient for the baking class. The complex consists of a sheep ranch, dairy farm, and an animal farm where children can feed animals like goats, rabbits, calves, sheep, chickens, and deer. There is also a nice coffee shop; two restaurants – one offering Korean cuisine and one offering Western-style dishes; two experience buildings, where kids do all the baking and cooking activities; a small playground for toddlers and young kids; the Farmer’s Village, where the accommodations and the newly opened outdoor pool are; and the Farmer’s Market, where products made at the farm or grown locally are sold. I was really surprised to realize what the dairy products I buy online are actually made here. Handmade cheese and jams are also top products sold at the store. Sangha's brand products. Goods sold at the Farmer's Market. The farm offers a milking tour, where visitors can see cows being milked and milk being processed into cheese and bottled milk, but we arrived too late for that. One thing that I particularly noticed was the lack of odor. I was also impressed to see that the animals were taken good care of and clean. We had an early dinner at the Sangha Kitchen, the Western-style restaurant. Vegetables from the garden and the sausages made at Sangha are used at the restaurant. We ordered the signature dish, pizza with sausages, mushroom sauce pasta, a salad, and a soft chicken dish, which was the best chicken I have ever had in Korea. The food was delicious and more consistent than I had expected. The soft chicken. Enjoying a Sangha ice-cream outdoor. Finally, I’d like to mention that my favorite dairy brand in Korea is Sangha.Even though their products are slightly pricier than others, the quality is unquestionable. Why not kayak your way through the heart of Seoul while experiencing one of the most refreshing ways to explore it? Here are 5 reasons why kayaking on the Han River is worth trying! 1.       AN AFFORDABLE AND EASY-TO-BOOK ACTIVITY Credits: creatrip.com The Hangang Kayaking is one of the most affordable water experiences in Seoul, with prices averaging ₩35,000 for a 2-hour session. You can book through various sites such as Trazy, Creatrip or GetYourGuide, with day and evening sessions available. You are advised to book your experience at least 3 days before, as it is a popular activity for tourists and locals, and the spots available get occupied easily. If you want to cancel your booking, you can take advantage of the cancellation policy up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. If you cancel 3 days before the reserved date, you’ll be able to get a 100% refund, while if you cancel 1-2 days before, the refund will be 50% only. Any cancellation on the reserved day or less is non-refundable, so make sure you take this into account to avoid losing the money you invest. The kayaking tours can be cancelled due to bad weather, so if this happens, you’ll be informed and get a full refund. Most tours depart from Yeouido or Ttukseom Hangang Parks ,  which are easily accessible by subway or bus. Despite being provided with most of the equipment necessary, wetsuits aren’t included, so you need to rent one at ₩10,000 on site. Personal expenses (food, drinks, souvenirs) aren’t included in the price, so make sure you budget wisely! 2.       A PICTURESQUE AND PHOTO-WORTHY VIEW OF SEOUL Credits: theabroadguide.com Why just walk by the Han River when you can experience it by floating through it? Kayaking can give you a different view of Seoul and its skyline, bridges and popular spots like Lotte Tower or Namsan Tower. If you are keen on taking pictures and posting on social media, kayaking is a photo-worthy adventure impossible to get from land. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for kayaking as the weather and scenery are the most pleasant. Morning paddles are the most relaxing and peaceful, while evening paddles are perfect for photography lovers and romantics at heart. 3.       A PERFECT EXPERIENCE FOR BOTH NEWCOMERS AND ENTHUSIASTS Credits: theabroadguide.com Don’t worry if you have never gone kayaking before! Newcomers are as welcome as experienced people, so if you have never been in a kayak before, it’s time to try kayaking for the first time. As a beginner, you can request an English-speaking instructor who will guide you through safety tips and techniques. Some services offer a short kayaking lesson before you begin, so if you feel anxious about your lack of experience, this first preparatory lesson will definitely help you feel more comfortable. You are always provided with the necessary equipment before the kayaking experience at the location, so it isn’t necessary to bring your own. 4.   AN ESCAPADE SUITABLE FOR BOTH ADVENTURE LOVERS AND TRANQUILITY SEEKERS Credits: www.klook.com Kayaking initially sounds like an adrenaline-rushing activity that only adventure lovers would enjoy, doesn’t it? However, you don’t have to be in search of adventure to go kayaking on the Han River.
