In the late 21st century, in a world not too different from our own, a poignant love story unfolds—not between humans, but between two lifelike helper bots. 'Maybe Happy Ending', a South Korean original musical with lyrics by playwright and lyricist Park Chun-hue also known as Hue Park, music by American composer Will Aronson, and a book co-written by both Park and Aronson, beautifully explores the depth of connection, memory, and emotion in a world shaped by technology.
A Future That Feels Real
Set on the outskirts of Metropolitan Seoul, the story follows Oliver, an outdated helper bot living alone in a worn-down apartment. Once built to assist humans, Oliver now spends his days in solitude, holding onto the hope that his long-gone owner, James, might return.
One day, a knock at the door changes everything. Claire, another helper bot from the same building, arrives seeking help—her charger is broken. Reluctantly, Oliver lends her his portable charger. Through this simple act of kindness, a bond begins to grow between them.
Their connection deepens as they embark on a journey to find fireflies—a quest that leads them to confront the complexities of human emotions. As their feelings evolve, Oliver and Claire begin to understand love, loss, and the bittersweet beauty of what it means to care deeply. In the end, 'Maybe Happy Ending' offers a tender and humanistic tale of two machines daring to feel.
