  • How to use Korean transportation

Korean culture may be totally shocking for most foreigners, and the transportation is no different. This article is here to help you understand how to properly use Korean transportation so you will have a smooth transit from home to work, school, or meeting friends. In buses, you just go up through the front door, and you go down through the back door (some buses only have one door, so going in and out is easier). When you enter and exit the bus you should check the T-money card (when exiting, it helps for transit since you won't pay again if you change the bus or subway in less than 30 minutes). To get to the next station, you have to press one of the red buttons that say STOP and then you will hear a beep so you can be sure that the driver will stop (sometimes if there are no passengers who want to get off / get on, the bus does not stop). Therefore, in less crowded areas, it is good to signal the driver to stop. You can't go inside the bus with food or drinks that are open, like coffee cups or burgers. Also, most buses have Wi-Fi for free, so make sure to check the windows for the proper sticker. And nowadays, electric buses have USB ports that allow you to charge your phone. Also, make sure you don't leave any trash on the bus, and throw it away in the garbage can provided near the door. There are also special seats for elderly people and pregnant women, distinguished by different colors, orange or yellow for the elderly and pink for pregnant. In the subway, the classic rules must be followed such as stopping on the right side of the escalator, because the left one is for people who want to keep going. First exit and then enter the subway. Both on the subway and on the bus, the transport card is validated once at the entrance and once again at the exit (the main reason being that there is a discount when connecting several means of transport). The transport card is the same for all means of transport. The subways also have Wi-Fi routers that you can connect to if you have a monthly plan paid at a certain Korean phone company. The seats are also, designated for the elderly (usually 6 seats near the first and last door of the cart) and for pregnant women, with the pink color and the sign above. The stations are announced in 4 languages and they also say the side of the door, so make sure you wait at the right one. The subway has 9 carts most of the time (with a few exceptions) and all carts have 4 doors, the door number is written on the platform starting with 1-1 and ending with 9-4 (this is used for easier access for stairs and elevators). Also, in the subway, you are not allowed to eat, but you can grab a cup of coffee. These are just the normal cultural rules that Korea has when it comes to transportation. We hope you follow them and respect everyone that travels together with you!

  • How to report something to the police

In any country, it is important to know how to report to the police if something is stolen from you, if you have a problem, or if you have lost your belongings. The first thing to do is look for the nearest police station (경찰) where it happened. Whether you've had an incident, or someone has stolen something, you need to go to the nearest station because each district has a specific area for which it operates. If you have lost your ID card, you can usually go to the police station near your home. When you get to the station you have to specify to the officer at the entrance usually what your problem is. He will guide you to whoever handles your problem. Larger police stations have specific officers for various issues, but smaller ones may have a maximum of two who take over reports/complaints. You will have to explain in as much detail as possible what your problem is. In the case of a specific incident, if you have a friend who can come with you as a witness it is even better, if you do have something as proof it would be good to bring that as well. The police will want as many details as possible, so try to remember everything, time, date, location, who you were with, what you were doing, every detail is important. You will then need to complete a report, sometimes in Korean, but most of the time it is good in English as well. The report must be completed by hand, as detailed as possible. The officers will help you complete it so you don't have to be scared. You will leave them your details to contact you in the coming days with new information. After completing the report, you can leave. Sometimes they will take pictures of the evidence, or of your ID card to put them on file. You can go home quietly knowing that law enforcement will do everything possible to get things done. They will call you in the next few days or you will receive messages with updates. Once things are resolved you can withdraw your complaint (in case of a conflict, theft, or damaged property) or you can continue in court. Personally, I think it's better to leave things behind and get over what happened. To go to court you need money, a lawyer, and time, so as a foreigner, especially as a student, you should not try to complicate yourself if it is not something very important or has an effect on your health/safety. If you withdraw the complaint, you will have to appear in person or call to say you want it canceled. The procedure is not complicated at all. After that, you can go back to your previous life and rest assured that things have worked out. If you lose your ID card, you must report it to the police before you can recover it. To do this, you must fill out a loss form directly at the station. You must then provide proof of immigration in order to receive a new ID. There are also tourist police stations and most of the time, they also know English, so you can try to talk with them and they will guide you properly. Although the police can be scary, they can help you, so feel free to ask for help if you need it.

  • Naver Map vs Kakao Map

In Korea compared with other countries Google Map doesn't have much coverage because of the government's choice. Therefore, when you travel or come here to study or work, you have to know the two main navigation apps: Naver and Kakao map. These will save you a lot of time and also give you accurate time information and satellite pictures. Naver Map (네이버 지도) It is considered to be the most accurate map application in Korea. You can conveniently use surrounding information, public transport, and navigation from the home menu tab. You can check information such as locations, reviews, and menus of famous restaurants or shops. With the integrated search box, you can find all the necessary information about places, possible buses, subway lines, and detailed addresses. Naver is very fast to obtain and reflect information in real-time. Users who use Naver Maps can directly participate and modify the information, and it will be changed after screening within two days. Naver Map website | iOS | Android Kakao Map (카카오 맵) Kakao Map is also a popular map app to Koreans for its high accuracy. However, many people think that Kakao Map is more convenient than Naver Map because it can be linked to both KakaoTalk and KakaoTaxi. Like other map applications, Kakao Map allows you to find out your current location, find the fastest route to the destination you want to go, and provide detailed directions for you. This app also provides directions for a variety of transport such as cars, bicycles, public transport, and also for walking. It also tells you which bus/subway you have to take and when the bus/subway will arrive. Travel time on this app is calculated quite accurately. You can choose the fastest way to go, the shortest subway and bus waiting time, the least-walk way, and the simplest way to go. Meanwhile, the advantage of Kakao Map is that you can share your location with friends who use KakaoTalk. It is useful when you make an appointment because you can easily check the location of your friends. You don’t have to worry about privacy because it lasts for only 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or an hour. Kakao map also has Kakao bus and Kakao taxi services separately. Both Naver and Kakao provide English services and are pretty similar as interface. Satellite/ or street view option is called 거리뷰 and it works the on both apps. Kakao Map website | iOS | Android Don't forget to download these apps for better navigation while in Korea!

  • How to cook: Kimchi-jjigae (김치찌개)

Kimchi stew or Kimchi-jjigae (김치찌개) is one of the Korean cuisine's most popular soups. It's a comforting, hearty, spicy, tasty, and delectable dish that everyone enjoys, especially when it is cold outside or you drink. We don't know expats who don't like kimchi-jjigae as long as they can handle the spiciness. Ingredients for the jjigae (4 portions) 1 kg of kimchi, sliced into bite-sized pieces A quarter cup of kimchi sauce Pork shoulder, 500 grams (or pork belly) Half package of tofu, sliced into 2 cm thick bite-size slices (optional) 3 onions (green) 1 medium chopped onion (1 cup) 1 tsp. salt (kosher) Sugar (two tsp.) 2 tbsp. gochugaru  (Korean hot pepper flakes) 1 tbsp. gochujang (Korean chili paste) 1 teaspoon sesame oil 2 cups anchovy broth (or chicken or beef broth) - made or bought Ingredients to make the stock (about 2 and a half cups) - if you want to make it yourself Heads and guts removed from 7 big dried anchovies 1/3 cup thinly sliced Korean radish (or daikon radish) 10 cm dried kelp 3 green onions Four cups of water *1 Tbsp = 15ml, 1 Cup = 250ml To make anchovy stock (멸치국물) In a saucepan, add anchovies, daikon, green onion roots, and dried kelp. With a spoon, mix the ingredients and put the tofu on top Cook for another 10 to 15 minutes over medium heat, covered 1 green onion, chopped, should be placed on top of the stew Remove from the heat and immediately serve with rice This is one of our favorite dishes! What is yours?

  • Being pregnant in Korea (what, how, when)

South Korea is one of the countries with the most lower birth rate, the 2nd after Taiwan. Korea's lowest fertility rate in the world is 0.92 as of last year (2021). Therefore, the government is putting a lot of effort into raising these numbers. Below you have the perks of having a baby in Korea, what you have to do, how to do it, and when. Perks The South Korean government will reward childbirth with 2 million won ($1,826) and pay 300,000 won monthly until the child becomes 1 from 2022 as the latest measure to aid the country’s stubbornly low birth rate. The government will dole out an immediate cash gift of 2 million won for birth from 2022. The voucher limit for expectant mothers will stretch to 1 million won, which means a mother will be compensated with 3 million won for having a child and giving birth. Couples also would get 3 million won in monthly coverage during their three-month parental leave. Small and mid-size enterprises that keep returnees for one or more years after employees come back from parental leave will be given 15 to 30 percent tax credit benefits, up from 5 to 10 percent. SMEs will also receive 2 million won in monthly funds for three months with employees on parental leave. How to get all the perks? The very first thing to do is to apply for the pregnancy support program as soon as you verify your pregnancy and it must be supported by a medical certificate from the hospital you went to test. They will verify the baby, the heartbeat, and of course your body. Application for pregnancy assistance can be processed online for Korean couples and multicultural families; however, physical presence is necessary when applying for the ATM card at the bank, which is called the Haengbok card (극민행복카드) (check the affiliated banks near your home). With both ATM cards, you can receive an amount of 500,000-600,000 KRW (depending on your family's financial status) that can be used for checkups. The Haeng-bok (극민행복카드) card itself can be shown at pre-and post-natal tests and medical procedures to cover the cost, as well as delivery fees for certain products. Aside from prenatal monetary assistance, a pregnant woman can also visit the local health centers (also known as ‘bo-geon-so’ 보건서) to receive free folic acid and iron capsules. Some health centers have additional gifts such as products for newborns or pregnancy kits and booklets. You will also receive a pregnancy diary. Depending on your financial status, you may qualify for subsidies on medical expenses. They also handed out a pregnancy tag that you can place on your handbag to signify to others that you are pregnant, even when you are not showing. This is so you can use the designated seats on public transport for pregnant women. The government also offers some free activities such as yoga, counseling, and other classes (like breastfeeding classes) that will ensure one’s mental and physical stability and wellbeing. Also, after birth, you can apply to rent a breast pump device for free. Giving Birth in Korean Hospitals Giving birth in Korea is very convenient and has the most organized programs ever. Hospitals are not crowded, the medical staff is usually very friendly, comforting, and accommodating. Nursing the baby is assisted by the nurses (both bottle and breastfeeding). They call moms to go to the nursing room during feeding time and they also provide an electric breast pump during your stay. You might also be lucky to get presents on top of the hospital gift for your baby. Post-partum care in Korea Korean postpartum care centers (산후조리원) step in to save the day. These centers function like hotels where new moms and newborns go to rest and bond for about a week or two. Though the price may differ for each postpartum care center, the minimum cost can be estimated to be about 2,000,000 won per week. This may sound pricey for some people, but it includes the costs for meals, snacks, massages, lactational advice classes, and other accommodations of your choice. Another option for new mothers is to hire a postpartum caregiver. This caregiver is a “nanny” who helps care for your baby, such as changing diapers, feeding, and putting him or her to sleep. She also helps you by cleaning the house and preparing food for you; however, you must prepare the ingredients for her. The duration of this service lasts for about a week, 5 working days, to three weeks, 15 working days. The government partially pays for this service, so don’t be alarmed by the caregiver fee. You can also receive at least 300,000 won back after the service ends if you submit the receipt of the caregiver company back to your registered district’s public health service (보건소). Check the Korean governmental social welfare for more information. What was your experience with pregnancy in Korea? Would you like to have a baby in this country?

  • Orthodox Church in Seoul - Saint Nicholas (정교회 성 니콜라스 대성당)

Nikolai Alexeyevitch Swischy, the Secretary of the Russian diplomatic mission in Seoul, had the idea to establish an Orthodox mission in Korea. Swischy sent a lengthy memorandum to his superiors in the spring of 1889, in which he persuaded them to establish a Russian Orthodox Mission in Korea. The Ecumenical Patriarchate took the Orthodox Church of Korea under its pastoral care in 1955, at the request of the Korean Orthodox faithful, and this care has continued unabated to this day. The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew have jurisdiction over the Korean Metropolis. The Patriarchate is currently housed in Phanar, Istanbul's northern district (formerly Constantinople). Since the Orthodox church is not well known in Korea, unfortunately only two parishes are located at the same address in Seoul. One is Saint Nicholas (정교회 성 니콜라스 대성당) while the other is called Saint Maxim. However, throughout the whole Korean peninsula, there are several other places where you can find a similar church. On their website, you can also find the schedule for every month and you can download the Orthodox calendar. The church is located in the middle of Seoul, near Gondeok and Aeogae station, in Mapo-gu. Also, you can get off the bus at the Mapo Police office station and walk up the hill near it to get to the church. Be aware that most sermons are in the Russian language since this is a Russian Orthodox church and not a Greek one. But people there know English and Korean and you can find a place to pray in peace for your loved ones. Also, you can buy candles to be lit inside the church for 1,000 KRW a piece (make sure to have cash since they don't accept cards). During special occasions, they also have a buffet and you can enjoy some traditional food. This is the only one in Seoul, so if you find yourself to be an Orthodox, or you want to visit a church you can totally go there. Make sure to pay your respect since it is a place of worship. The observatory is located on the third floor of the building and is accessible after going through the cafe Daily Camel (낙타카페)) on the second floor. Because the observatory's location was thought to resemble a camel's back, it was also known as Camel Mountain (), hence the name Daily Camel. • Going to the cinema in Korea

CGV, Mega Box, and Lotte Cinema are the three major movie theaters in Korea, and you will most certainly go to one of them when your favorite film is released. The prices of cinema tickets for these three brands are quite similar, ranging from 8,000 to 10,000 KRW for a regular 2D film. Ticket costs are also affected by film types (e.g., 2D, 4DX, IMAX, and so on) and program hours. In Korea, new popular films are often shown multiple times in a single day, with certain sessions running till 2 a.m. Due to COVID-19 restrictions seats and hours may be limited so check in advance, also only some of the rooms allow food inside. The variety of seating choices available in Korean movie theaters is among the reasons why local and foreign citizens in Korea like them. In addition to normal seats, some movie theaters provide a 'wide box' or 'comfort seat,' which provides a more pleasant and spacious experience. 'Couple seat' is an excellent choice for people who want to unwind on a lovely sofa in a semi-private space, only for both you and your lover, while watching a movie. Foreign films are frequently available in English in Korea, with Korean subtitles displayed on the screen. However, some movies are occasionally made available in Korean, but this appears to be a rare occurrence that typically happens exclusively with Disney pictures or animated films aimed mostly at youngsters. In a similar spirit, Korean films are typically shown without English subtitles in their native language. Therefore, you will almost certainly need some degree of Korean language skills to experience a Korean movie in Korean theaters. When the title of the film contains the word dubbing (더빙), it signifies the film has been dubbed and is accessible in Korean. Dubbing is only done for foreign-language films to make them more accessible in Korean. Sometimes you'll see the word subtitle (자막) added to the title of a film, indicating that it has subtitles in Korean or English. In Korea, movie tickets are available to buy in person at a theater or online via the internet. A ticket counter with personnel as well as ticket machines with a touchscreen display is available at CGV, Mega Box, and Lotte Cinema. English is an option on these ticket machines. However, you can buy your tickets in advance online through their websites or applications. Choose the address of the cinema theatre where you want to see a film. You can find the nearest movie theater by turning on your GPS. Choose the movie you want to see, and you'll see timeslots and seats that are available. Payments can mainly be made online using a bank card or other mobile banking services like Kakao Pay. You will receive an automated message with your ticket information after the transaction has been completed. You can also use the website/app to look for information. In addition, Korean cinemas often have nice gifts for premiere movies and discounts available through other apps. These nice things make the Korean cinema experience unique and joyful.

  • How to log in with certificates on different websites

Most Korean governmental websites require a special login method, which uses certificates such as Kakao, Naver, or 공동인증서(구 공인인증서) Digital Certificate or Digital signature. A lot of us can't understand how to make one or how to use it to log in. We have made a special article for each of them, and now we will explain how to log in using this certificate. When you open certain applications, they will have this type of menu. This menu gives you the opportunity to choose what type of login you want. The first one is the digital certificate from the bank, the second is the certificate from other companies, and the last is the financial certificate. We mostly use the digital ones or Kakao and Naver ones. The easiest to make and to log in with. For the first one, when you press on it, this page will open, this page will ask you to choose the certificate and then put the correct password that you have on that certificate. After this is completed then you can just log in. For the other companies, you have to choose which one of them you want, then input your name, date of birth or id card number (by case), and phone number, press next or 다음. You will receive a message on that application that you need to check and press confirm or 확인. After just come back to the page and you will be logged in. For the financial certificate, in case you have it, just input your name, phone number, and date of birth and press confirm or 확인. Then if the certificate is confirmed you will log in. Using a certificate to log in is pretty easy, and is required for a lot of websites, so make sure to have them and use them properly, also to check their expiration dates.
