Embrace the Summer Heat in Korea
Summer in Korea brings intense heatwaves, stifling humidity, and heavy monsoon rains. This season can be challenging, especially as recent years keep setting new records for scorching temperatures. Yet, despite the sweltering conditions, Korean summers can also be vibrant, refreshing, and full of joy if you know how to make the most of them.
A key advantage is Korea’s peninsula geography, surrounded by water on three sides. Each side offers unique coastal charms and endless ways to beat the heat. Whether it’s beach trips, island escapes, or riverside retreats, Korea’s summer has a way of turning the heat into an adventure.

Namhae: The Butterfly Island
Among all the touristic islands competing for visitors, one of the best known is Namhae, also known as the Butterfly Island. Its shape resembles the wings of a butterfly. In my opinion, Namhae is the most touristic island I have visited so far. It is well-known for the German Village, where visitors can enjoy authentic German beer and cuisine. However, the island has many other hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

The German Village Experience
The German Village was built for Koreans who worked as miners and nurses in Germany during the 1960s. Today, it is a significant attraction for both Koreans and foreigners alike. The village is perched on a hill overlooking the bay. It is surrounded by European-style pensions, souvenir shops, and restaurants where you can sip on some tasty German beers. As a European myself, I can assure you that you’ll feel right at home. The food and beers are authentic. But remember, the German Village is just a small part of this island, which has so much more to offer.

Scenic Coastal Roads
Leaving the village and turning right, the coastal road climbs higher into the mountains while remaining close to the sea. This route offers stunning views. You may want to stop at the Namhae Observatory to take in the breathtaking scenery. Here, you can also try some of the island’s Yuzu (yuja in Korean) delicacies served at the coffee shop inside, such as yuzu ice cream and yuzu ade. For those who are brave, there is a skywalk outside the observatory where you can walk or swing above the sea.

The Seolli Skywalk
The next stop on the coastal road is the Seolli Skywalk (설리스카이워크). This glass-floored cantilever offers sweeping ocean vistas from 36 meters up. I saw the sunset from here, and it was one of the most beautiful, tranquil, and relaxing moments I had on my one-day trip to Namhae.

Sangju Silversand Beach
Continuing along the coastal road, you will reach one of the most beautiful beaches on the island: Sangju Silversand Beach (상주 은모래). This beach offers a magnificent view of Mountain Geum in the background. The sand is soft, and the water is clear, warm, and clean, making this beach a favorite among tourists. I visited on a weekday, and it wasn’t crowded.
Around this area, you will find pensions and hotels, as well as restaurants that offer not only traditional raw fish dishes but also more Western options like hamburgers and pizza. So, you won’t go hungry if raw fish isn't your thing.
Fresh Seafood Delights
Beyond its natural beauty, Namhae is celebrated for its fresh seafood. You can enjoy sashimi, grilled octopus, anchovies (“myeolchi ssambap” - 멸치쌈밥), and garlic-infused specialties drawn from local harvests and sea catches.
Conclusion: A Perfect Getaway
In all, Namhae is perfect for travelers wanting a slower pace, stunning landscapes, rich local culture, and fresh coastal flavors. It’s a hidden gem that rewards visitors beyond expectation. However, a one-day trip is too short if you want to explore all its beauties.
