1. What is a Climate Card
The Climate Card is an unlimited public transportation pass that will start as a trial project in Seoul starting on January 27, 2024. The Climate Card will be available to purchase from Tuesday, January 23rd (but can be used from the 27th) and will be divided by the transportation types you want to use it for:
62,000 won: subway + bus
65,000 won: subway + bus + bicycle
It was presented as a way of increasing public transportation usage and bringing more eco-friendly transportation policies. It is expected that residents of the Seoul metropolitan area (including Seoul and Incheon) to reduce their transportation expenses to around 340,000 won per person with this card. It will be on trial from January 27th to the end of June. However, it is expected to be fully introduced as a permanent option in July.
The card can be issued and recharged on the mobile app or at machines on all subway lines 1-8.
With this card, you can use:
Gyeongui/Jungang Line
Suinbundang Line
Gyeongchun Line
Uisin New Line
Sillim Line
Airport Railroad (Gimpo Airport to Seoul Station)
as well as subway lines 1 to 9 that get in and out of downtown Seoul, without additional fees.
2. How do you register for a Climate Card
Issuance and recharge will be available in two ways:
Mobile card
How to register: Use the mobile T-money app on Android smartphones and recharge monthly through account transfer from the app.
Keep in mind that for iOS smartphones you are required to use ONLY the physical card however you CAN RECHARGE through account transfer in the app or website
More payment methods are to be added after the trial period.
Physical card
For purchases with cash, you will charged 3,000 won.
You are required for use register the card in the T-money card & Pay app

You can use the Climate Card with Seoul city buses and village buses. However, extra fees might apply to buses in other regions such as Gyeonggi, Incheon, or metropolitan buses with different basic fees. Please note that it can be classified according to the route license.
따릉이, Ttareungyi a public bicycle operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government (you read about it here), is also available with the Climate Card. You can use an unlimited one-hour pass, and Incheon and Gimpo will also cooperate to provide the service in the future.
4. Advantages
Climate Card offers e a reduction in transportation costs With an unlimited number of all public transportation in the Seoul area at 65,000 won/ month, it can reduce monthly transportation costs for Seoul citizens. It has a significant economic effect, especially for long commutes or frequent public transportation users. If you commute from Seoul to Suwon using the Suwon-bound train, you can save more than 200,000 won on monthly transportation costs by using the Climate card.
According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the introduction of the Climate Card project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide by 100,000 tons a year.
5. Disadvantages
For those who do not commute as often or those using the lines that are not included on the list might not be as cost-effective as for the other.
A monthly pass might not be too helpful for cutting the transportation cost if you do not use the transportation card more than approximately 43 times/month.
