Living in Korea may be very challenging when you don’t know the language, or you find it difficult to get the proper information, so a lot of expats got very huge fines because they don’t know how to report important things on time. This is also related to your address in Korea.
You have to report your address within 14 days, or else a 100,000 KRW fee (or more) can be received.
You can go to your local district office (주민센터) near your home, or the Gu-office (구청) - no reservation needed or to the immigration office (reservation will be required in advance on the HiKorea website), or just change your address online at https://www.hikorea.go.kr/Main.pt.
To change it online you have to log in, or first sign up if you don’t have an account, press on e-application then choose the notification of change of residence from the list, complete with the new address and personal information, then upload the Application form, ID card, Passport, new house contract copies and you are good to go.
In case you go in person, you have to present the following: your ID card in Korea, passport, house contract copies, and original and application form (available there). The procedure will take around 10-20 minutes.
*The contract can differ by what type of residence you have, dormitory contract will usually be provided by the university, if you live in a Gosiwon, the people there will sign a contract with you when you move in, so just present that together with a copy of their business registration. In case your contract is made for a shared house, it may be necessary to have a written paper or a phone call to the owner together with a copy of the contract so they know you are really living in that house. One room, apartment, or any other house where your contract is official from the agency doesn’t require any other additional documents. If you live with your boyfriend and the apartment is in another person’s name then that person should give you their ID card copy and a written note regarding you staying there to present together with the contract they have.
*If you stay in that house even after the contract expires, the continuation is usually automatically done, so you don’t have to re-make the contract nor report it again.
Don’t forget this important step if you want to be sure you don’t pay any fees. This is very important when you live in this country.
